Ballet: Routines must consist of ballet or pointe technique. Ballet, or pointe shoes must be worn to be entered in the ballet category.
Tap: A routine containing tap technique, performed with tap shoes.
Jazz: A routine demonstrating jazz technique.
Lyrical: A routine that demonstrates lyrical technique with dynamic movements and expressive emotions.
Contemporary: A mix of jazz styles with an emphasis on modern ballet technique and interpretive movement.
Open: A routine that demonstrates any dance style or combination of dance styles. Examples include, acro-gymnastics, ballroom, novelty, character, and clogging. Routines containing more than 3 gymnastic/acro tricks must be entered in this category.
Musical Theatre: A routine showcasing Broadway or theatre dance styles. Singing is permitted in this category only. Microphones for vocals are not provided.
Hip-Hop: A routine that demonstrates hip-hop or street type moves. Break dancing is permissible.
Each studio will be allowed to compete a maximum amount of routines based on the information below. If a studio does not reach the number of participants listed below they may enter a maximum of 40 entries total. The 40 routines may also include solos. ONLY 1 solo per dancer.
If there are too many entries to compete all the routines on Saturday, dancers registering for a Solo or Duo/Trio must be available to perform on Fridays after 4:00 pm.
You must upload your music online under the competition portion of your online registration.

In addition to the adjudicated awards, a competitive 1st, 2nd or 3rd place award will also be given to the highest scoring Solo, Duo/Trio, Small Group, Large group and Line. The Highest Scoring Solo winner will receive FREE Competition entry, for that number, at the 2020 Applause Regional Competition!
Within 24 hours after each event, all score sheets and critiques will be made available in the Studio Center.
At Refresh, we offer “For Teachers Only” critiques. We recognize that sometimes Judges want to speak to the teacher about costumes or choreography, with comments that do not apply to young dancers. One Judge on the competition panel will be dedicated to providing these critiques.
Refresh is excited to offer a free webcast at our competitions. The webcast link will go live on the Refresh website 5-10 minutes before the start of competition. Please understand that sometimes we are unable to offer this service as we can be limited by a venues internet capabilities. Please know that we will do everything in our power to deliver this amazing service!
Videotaping and flash photography are strictly prohibited during the entire event. This is to enforce the dancer’s safety and privacy, as well as protecting the work of choreographers and faculty. Media Memories offers professional photos and videos of the competition. All participating dancers authorize the use of their image in photos and video for Refresh publicity and advertisement purposes.
The Refresh Competition and Closing Show are absolutely FREE.
NO props may be used during the competition.
To compete at Refresh, a dancer must be registered for the entire Workshop.
All competition routines must be entered under a Studio name. Refresh does not accept entries from Independent dancers, including soloists.
Professional dancers are welcome to participate at our Workshop, but cannot perform in the competition.
If there is a Refresh equipment malfunction at the competition, the affected Studio may choose to continue or to re-do the number. If there is an equipment malfunction on behalf of a Studio, the performance must continue or be withdrawn.
Competing dancers should be ready ONE HOUR prior to their scheduled competition time.
Competition may run up to ONE HOUR early and each dancer will be expected to perform at the earlier time. Please keep this in mind if you are leaving the theatre between dancers and plan on returning for the awards ceremony.
